The second tribe caught on the highway

The second young mother from Nunavik died Saturday morning on Highway 20 East near an Inuit shelter awaiting medical treatment on Montreal Island in two days.

“She should be back today [samedi]. We are in shock,” Dora Niewiaksi, the victim’s mother, said from her home in Umiujac, a village of a few hundred people in Nord-du-Quebec.

At 1:20 a.m. Saturday, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was called to a pedestrian crossing on Highway 20 East at 55th Avenue, on the border between the boroughs of Dorval and Lachine.

Nellie Niviaxie, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash.

“However, the circumstances surrounding the crash on the highway remain unclear. An SQ reconstructionist went to the scene and the investigation is ongoing,” said Stephen Tremblay, a spokesman for the provincial police.

In a wheelchair

Earlier in the day, a 22-year-old mother from Puvirniduk, Nunavik, Mary-Jane Tulukak, was struck about two kilometers away on Highway 520 near Marshall Avenue while she was on the highway in a wheelchair.

According to our information, the two women were staying at the Ullivik Center, located near the site of the two tragedies, which welcomes Inuit awaiting medical treatment in Quebec City.

Nellie Niviaxie, a mother also supporting an injured loved one, explained to her parents in a weak voice.

“We wanted her to come home,” her mother repeated over the phone.

His parents, however, did not know much about the circumstances surrounding his death and were hoping for answers.

Foot surgery

For her part, Mary-Jane Tulcak remained at the center for leg surgery, her mother Jenny confirmed on Friday.

On Thursday night, he posted a snapshot on his Facebook account of himself with another woman, with a drink on a table, with slot machines in the background.
