Authorities said it was a Manhattan pain management doctor who caused the suffering when he allegedly assaulted a woman and threw her mobile phone out of a 30th-floor window.
Jean-Jacques “Jack” Mbabweke, 38, was arrested August 29 in a luxury building on Sixth Avenue and West 27th Street in Chelsea, according to the New York Police Department and a criminal complaint.
Documents show that he was also charged that day with an incident in November 2021 when he was accused of pushing a woman to the ground.
The victim in both cases was his girlfriend at the time and was treated in hospital for bruises after the alleged latest assault, according to a source familiar with the case.
Mbabweki was questioned on August 31 and released without bail. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said Criminal Court Judge Melissa Lewis granted a temporary protection order to the victim.
The office said an earlier case against Mbabweki had been closed.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Mbabuike, a graduate of New York University School of Medicine, practices at NYC Pain MD in Lower Manhattan.
He did not immediately respond to a letter left with the office. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The state health department, which regulates doctors, said it “takes patient health and safety seriously and takes appropriate action in cases of potential misconduct.” It will not comment further on any potential investigation.
