Tom Hanks announces first ‘very ambitious’ novel | Wrote

The first Oscar-winning Tom Hanks novel has been announced, and is scheduled for release next year. The book’s publisher described Hanks’ second foray into fiction — publishing a collection of short stories in 2017 — as a “very ambitious” story about making a movie.

The Making of Other Motion Picture Masterpiece spans 80 years and culminates in the titular opening, a “huge, star-studded, multi-million dollar superhero action movie” inspired by a comic book.

Characters include a troubled soldier returning from war, a young boy with an artistic gift, an inspiring and quirky director, a rising movie star and a tireless production assistant.

The novel will be published by Penguin Random House (PRH) and is scheduled for release in both the United Kingdom and the United States on May 9, 2023.

Hanks, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump said, “Filmmaking is very hard work over a very long period of time consisting of many moments of joy exposed to an equal number of subjective emotions. Ayla Ahmed, publishing director at Hutchinson Heinemann, the PRH imprint that publishes Hanks’ book in the UK, said working on the actor’s debut was “a publisher’s dream come true”.

She added, “The fact that he wrote an epic about ordinary people in a somewhat unusual world, a world so thoughtful, poignant, and so interesting is remarkable.”

An uncommon genre, Hanks’ collection of short stories, focused on his collection of vintage typewriters. The book has sold 234,000 copies in the UK so far, according to PRH.
