If the first snowflakes have already fallen in northern Quebec, it will be the first for the heavily populated areas south of the 49th connexion.

Conditions will be met

A well-established cold front in Quebec will produce solid precipitation next weekend. An atmospheric trough can effectively promote the descent of Arctic air from the north of the continent. Night temperatures can approach 0°C and even drop below in many places.

Between Thursday and Saturday, all conditions will be met. Thursday through Friday nights will be one to watch closely: sunless and frozen ground will inspire the white carpet.

However, there are many uncertainties.

Scenario 1: Width

A wider side is also possible for Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and Val-d’Or has a right. Snow falls mostly in this region starting from the first week of October. Part of Nord-du-Québec, including the municipality of Chibougamau, is also on the list.

Good to know – The term line is used when snow accumulations equal to or greater than 15 cm are forecast.

Areas further south may also see snow, but the chances of seeing accumulations are slim. Hautes-Laurentides and Estrie saw some snowflakes, especially on the mountains. We still have to wait for the St. Lawrence Valley, including the metropolitan area. Snowdrops usually appear in Montreal during the last week of October.

Scenario 2: A missed opportunity

If the temperature is slightly higher and the low pressure center takes a northerly track, the meeting with the first snow may be missed.

However, keep in mind that this snow can be difficult to accumulate. At this time, weather models disagree on the exact amounts expected. After all, mercury near freezing makes water muddy. At such temperatures, snow is heavier and denser, which usually leads to lower accumulations. A few centimeters can still fill the ground. Additionally, the path of a system that may bring snow remains uncertain, and precipitation depends on that path.
