More than 65,000 outages in Quebec

Violent winds that blew over Quebec on Saturday evening were felt in many parts of the province and caused power outages in many residences.

At 9:00 p.m., more than 65,000 Hydro-Québec customers found themselves in the dark, according to the state-owned company’s Info-Panness site.

“Strong winds are causing power outages in southwestern Quebec. These occur when plants interact with the network following the wind”, the power company pointed out.

According to the first estimate, the regions of Montérégie (22,691 customers), Laurentides (9,302 customers) and Lanaudière (3,952 customers) were the most affected.

About 11,597 homes on the island of Montreal and 3,660 homes in Laval were without power at the same time. Centre-du-Québec (6,866 customers) and Estrie (4,541 customers) did not leave.

“As the wind continues to blow, the number of customers without orders will continue to fluctuate throughout the evening. Our teams are working to restore service as quickly as possible,” he added.

A wind warning was issued by Environment Canada in the afternoon.

Can the warning read “Southwest winds gusting to 90 kilometers per hour later today”, with possible damage to buildings?
