Man arrested in Montreal suspected of involvement in terrorist activities

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested 18-year-old Montrealer Mohamed Amine Assal of Ville Saint-Laurent on Thursday morning. It was the FBI that alerted Canadian authorities.

RCMP said the arrest was made to protect public safety and “to disrupt his suspicious activities.”

His house was also raided on Thursday morning.

RCMP received information from the FBI and had to act quickly, explained RCMP Sergeant Charles Poirier.

Following a brief investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), the RCMP “have reasonable grounds to fear that a person may commit terrorist offences. »

The teenager is scheduled to appear in a Montreal court Thursday afternoon. Under Section 810 of the Penal Code, a peace bond will be ordered.

The RCMP will continue their investigation to gather evidence against him, which could lead to the filing of criminal charges.

The RCMP won’t detail what information it has against Mohamed Amin Azal, but the federal police force’s report includes a section on countering “religious violent extremism.” »
