After selecting running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night, the Detroit Lions decided to replace current rookie D’Andre Swift.
The Lions shipped Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a pair of draft picks. According to multiple reports, the 2025 fourth-rounder is headed to Detroit in the deal, and the two sides traded seventh-rounders in this year’s draft.
The Eagles needed to bounce back after losing Miles Sanders in free agency. The Eagles previously signed Rashad Beene to a one-year contract and will now work to sign Swifts, who has been the Lions running back for the past three seasons.
Swift, who also happens to be a native of Philadelphia, has rushed for 1,680 yards and 18 touchdowns combined over the past three seasons. He also has 156 catches for 1,198 yards and seven career touchdowns.
On top of your hometown connection, Swift is a University of Georgia product. The Eagles used their first-round picks this year with Georgia players Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith. Early in the fourth round, the Eagles selected another UGA prospect, this time Kelly Ringo. Furthermore, the Eagles selected Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean from Georgia last year.
Swift, the runner-up in 2020, has one year remaining on his rookie contract worth $1.77 million.
On the Lions side, they used the No. 12 pick to add Gibbs, a versatile running back from Alabama. The Lions also signed former Bears manager David Montgomery in free agency. With Gibbs and Montgomery added to the roster, the Lions have been exploring options to get Swift moving. That came to fruition on Saturday in the third day of the NFL Draft.
