In the midst of tourist season, Montreal’s dirtiness is frustrating in more ways than one.

The condition of the city center leaves much to be desired with mountains of garbage on pavements, overflowing dustbins, clothes strewn everywhere and a sickening stench pervading several sections.
This situation is criticized by many citizens interviewed by TVA Nouvelles.

“It’s dirty all the time, especially at night. With restaurant waste, rats are everywhere.
“It is really a shame to see garbage on the roadside. It’s dirty, it’s messy.”
“Disgusting! I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to try and put everything in the trash instead of on the street.”
“It’s not clean from a shock. It’s very dirty, especially downtown and metro Perry. It’s horrible.”
The opposition parties and the city council are reacting
To the opposition of the City of Montreal, the issue has become an embarrassment for all Montrealers.
“What people see when they come to Montreal, especially in the entertainment district and our tourist areas, is that it’s not a pleasant city; It’s not a very inclusive city anymore; It’s a dirty city,” says Stephanie Valenzuela, opposition spokeswoman for the City of Montreal’s Environment.
Mayor Valérie Plante’s office responded in writing to TVA Nouvelles, indicating that the city is deploying significant resources to provide visitors and citizens with a unique and pleasant experience.
It ensures that daily crews work hard to ensure the cleanliness of downtown Montreal.
This year, the cleanup budget for the City of Ville-Marie was increased by $2 million, for a total of $23 million.
