One person was killed Tuesday evening in what became known as the Montreal St-Leonard metropolis.
Around 7:30 p.m., police officers of the Service de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) received several calls condemning the shooting from a building in Boulevard Jean-Dalen near Rue Michelette.
At the scene, police say Piero Arena, a 63-year-old drug trafficker linked to the Montreal Mafia, died.
Leading criminal investigators go on to understand the circumstances of the incident.
“We will try to see if we have surveillance cameras. We will try to see if we have witnesses,” explained SPVM spokeswoman Veronica Comtois.
Police are expected to be at the scene in the next few hours.
Close to the Mafia
According to TVA Nouvelles, the victim, Piero Arena, was a member of the Cotroni clan that ruled the city in the 1960s and 1970s.
The famous drug dealer has been arrested and convicted several times in Canada, but has long served in the United States for similar crimes.
Police sources and Secret Mount said Piero Arena had incurred significant debts, including that of the Risso family. He may have been shot for this very reason.
A few weeks later, on Tuesday evening, Piero Arena was the target of an assassination attempt on July 22 at the Sorrento Cafe near where he was shot.
