Melissa Gilbert criticizes SAG-AFTRA over Halloween strike rules

Melissa Gilbert thinks SAG-AFTRA’s Halloween guidelines are filled with more manure than prairie home pasture.

Gilbert’s post was in response to a post on the SAG-AFTRA website on Wednesday “Halloween Instructions” From the union. The page also encourages members to avoid posting photos of themselves in costumes inspired by strike action on social media, and instead advises them to choose a costume from non-strike action, such as an animated TV show.

“Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to our striking employees that we will not enhance their communications without a fair contract,” the notice concludes.

It’s unclear whether violating SAG-AFTRA’s guidelines will result in any official consequences, and the union did not immediately respond to EW’s request for clarification on the matter on Friday.

Either way, Gilbert flagged down SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, rebuking them for what fellow actor Kevin Zegers called a “frivolous and incompetent” move.

Gilbert and Zegers aren’t the only members of SAG-AFTRA who seemed to find the guidelines ridiculous. Ryan Reynolds quipped on Thursday On social media“I’m looking forward to yelling at my 8 year old all night long. She’s not in the union but she needs to learn.”

Meanwhile, the actors’ strike is approaching its 100th day, and negotiations with Hollywood studios broke down again last week. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers withdrew from the table and said in a statement: “After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is too great, and the conversations can no longer move us in the production direction.”

SAG-AFTRA called on the studios to return to the negotiating table. The organization said in a statement: “Let us be clear: our call is simple.” Posted on social media. “AMPTP, it’s time to negotiate honestly, value our contributions and embed an industry that supports everyone within it. This statement did not address the backlash to the Halloween directive, and it remains to be seen whether the guild will back down in any way.
