A child went missing in the Mistasini River three days before Christmas

A rescue operation continues for a small child who fell into the Mistasini River in front of his mother on Friday.

According to preliminary reports, the child and his mother were slipping into the waters of the Mistassini River, a tributary of Lake Saint-Jean, while they were slipping near the Motel Suite des Peres in Tolbeau-Mistassini.

Three days before Christmas, the tragedy occurred on Friday around 2:30pm near Panoramique Boulevard. All emergency services were quickly alerted.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the child was still missing and officers met with the mother who witnessed the tragic accident. Others were also present at this place during this event.

A command post has been deployed and firefighters are also involved in the search operation. Sweeping of the banks is underway and rescuers are engaged in rescue operations by boat.

A helicopter and divers from the Sûreté du Québec are expected on site, but there is a risk that operations will be reduced at night.

The missing child is believed to be around 4 years old.
