According to the first information received from Sûreté du Québec, an investigation into the major crime was opened to clarify the circumstances that led to the death.

The municipality of Boischatel said in a statement that the victim was over the age of forty, but that his family members had not been notified because his identity had not yet been released.

He is a volunteer firefighter who also worked in Quebec City, the capital’s mayor Bruno Mercant confirmed at a news conference late this morning. He said the victim was the father of three children.

A technician who specializes in fire investigations was to be sent to the scene Sunday morning to determine the origin of the incident.

A fire broke out at MRC de la Côte-de-Beaupré at 626 rue des Silex in Boischatel at 11:30 pm on Saturday. A member of the Boischatel / L’Ange-Gardien fire service was reportedly seriously injured while firefighters were engaged in extinguishing the blaze.

The man, who was rushed to hospital, unfortunately died last night without treatment, SQ spokeswoman Beatrice Dorsville said.

Support and condolence messages abound on social media, especially on pages dedicated to the brotherhood of firefighters.

The Secretary of Defense, Genevieve Gilbold, responded on Twitter, pointing out that he was the second firefighter to die during the mission two months apart. In order to extend his support to the relatives and colleagues of the deceased, he wrote, “Pure Virtue, This Is Infinite Respect.”

The Boischatel Municipal Council also sent “its true condolences to the family of the firefighter.” Elected officials, including Mayor Benoit Bouchard, were thought to be in mourning with the bereaved colleagues of the deceased during the mission, according to a news release issued Sunday afternoon.

Psychological assistance services are provided to members of the fire safety service who feel the need.

As for those in the apartment, they were all evicted. However, systems have been mobilized to help those who are completely homeless and victims.
