After a role on Season 2 of “Abbott Elementary,” Vince Staples' special has just premiered — and “Abbott” star and creator Quinta Bronson is hoping he'll be able to capture the good vibes from her set to bring to his own.
“The Vince Staples Show” is a Netflix limited series in which Staples plays a fictionalized version of himself, straddling the line between fame and obscurity. The rapper has a long musical career: he appeared alongside the group Odd Future and released his debut studio album “Summertime '06” in 2015. In 2021, his self-titled LP made Business Insider's list of the best albums of the year. .
Before launching his own series, which was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, he had a recurring role on “Abbott Elementary” where he played Maurice, one of Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) friends who briefly dates Bronson’s character, Janine.
Bronson spoke with Business Insider ahead of the Super Bowl, where she stars in a TurboTax ad several days after the highly anticipated return of Abbott Elementary's third season. The actor and writer said Staples was working on both projects simultaneously.
“We had a lot of conversations about television and what makes it work, and he got to see how the Abbott set works,” Bronson told BI. “I would say Vince is now one of my closest friends. “I love talking TV, comedy, music, everything with him, and he's so smart.”
Bronson told BI she hopes Staples can have a similar experience to her own. Before joining Abbott, she had a recurring role on the TBS comedy series “Miracle Workers,” which she said was formative. That experience informed how she wanted her own show to be viewed, and she hopes Staples can capture some of his “good energy.”
“This show was such an amazing environment, and I wanted to get that feeling in an Abbott movie,” she told BI. “So I hope Vince gets some good energy into his show.”
“The Vince Staples Show” is now streaming on Netflix. Season 3 of Abbott Elementary is streaming on Hulu.
