Forest fire: Firefighters deployed in Oga National Park

The fire started at Oga's Calvary, a popular spot for mountaineers.

Pointe-Calumet and Saint-Joseph-du-Lac Fire Protection Services assisted Oka firefighters with the fire from 8 p.m.

A hiker saw flames in the park before calling 911.

According to Oga National Park, the fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters in the evening. Authorities continue to monitor the scene, with smoke billowing from the scene.

The Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU) notes that a team was also sent to monitor the 2.1-hectare fire at 7am on Sunday.

SOPFEU says this will be the third wildfire of the season.

Oga National Park, for its part, says Oga's Calvary is accessible for hiking again.

According to SOPFEU, fire risk is highest in Greater Montreal, Centre-du-Quebec, Laurentians and Outavoy.

The fire season usually starts in early April, but SOPFEU had warned that it could start earlier this year.

Less than normal snowfall may have made the land drier and therefore more flammable.
