The Walking Dead: Those who live It wrapped its six-episode run on Sunday, with Rick and Michonne — played by Andrew Lincoln and Dania Gurira, who co-created the offshoot with Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple — (barely) succeeding in their plan to find and destroy The Alexandria file hidden by Jadis, then defeat not only Major Bell, but blow up the entire Philadelphia Civilian Republic army.

The sweet ending then gave extra closure, as Rick and Michonne returned home to reunite with their daughter Judith and finally introduce RJ to his brave father. (Read the final Q&A with Dania Gurira.)

Living The finale came nearly five and a half years after it was announced that Lincoln would headline an entire trilogy of Rick-centric films that would “expand” the Walking Dead universe and “show a completely different angle of the world.” But in July 2022, it was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that the film series would instead take the form of the limited series that premiered on AMC in February.

What would Rick's adventures resumed look like in the films he originally envisioned, versus the six-episode series we got? “Very, very different,” Gimple tells TVLine. “It was something very different, and was actually going through a lot of iterations in itself.

“When we started [developing] Movies, Danae was still running [The Walking Dead]”So she wasn't in that first movie, so it was very different,” Gimple explains.

Still, Rick and Michonne would reunite — “in the second movie, because I knew.” [Danai] “It would be available by then, and I knew it was going to be incredibly critical,” Gimple says. “But this made for a very different movie, even though Rick's circumstances were much the same, and the relationship with CRM and the city was much the same.”

Obviously everything has worked out for the better, especially since then Living Enjoyed direct input from franchise vets Lincoln and Gurira as co-creators and executive producers.

“I was nervous about going in that direction, in some ways,” Gimple says later. “You don't know what it's going to be like, but even in talking with Andrew about movies, there was a relaxed atmosphere. And then when it was just the three of us, that first day, we started cooking very quickly. I laid out all these ingredients on the table for them during The last five years and we started cooking together.

“We were on the same page but also challenging each other, and we were constantly making each other laugh,” the franchise master continues. “This was one of those things, even if it was a little bit of an erasure, it was a good time. We knew we were dealing with it fairly.”

Gurira actually wrote to Living – Episode 4, in which Rick and Michonne discuss “playing dead” after taking a leap of faith from a CRM helicopter that ended up crashing. Gurira referred to the time Michonne and Rick spent in that abandoned luxury apartment as a “bottle episode,” and Gimple agrees.

“When Andy, Danae and I were crashing [The Ones Who Lives‘] The story, I was saying: OK, this is the deal, this is how it's going to be done walking dead…” he recalls. because “walking dead not game of thronesit's not The last of us; “It’s on a different budget level, it is.” As such, you need a low-cost “bottle” ring to keep things under control.

“I told them so the walking Dead'You have a couple [episodes] Where do you do? huge Things, you have one where you can do Mediation Things, you have one that's a 'bottle' episode….'' The upside of the latter scenario is that “two people in a place can be very, very, very special,” Gimple says.

What made it extra special was that there was a Gurira pen for the actual text. “I thought, 'I'd love to write this story, but it has to be Danae,'” Gimple recalls. “I was so glad I left that, because she did an amazing job.”

Gimple also praises writers Matt Negrete, Channing Powell, Gabriel Llanas and Nana Nkwete for doing “an amazing job, working with me and Andy and Danae” on the six-episode series. “As writers in a writers room working with the stars of the show, it can be kind of intimidating, but they were great.”

There may be more Are there “great” times ahead for Gimple, Lincoln, Gurira and others? After all, Rick and Michonne are back home in Alexandria and on the carpet, but a full reunion awaits them featuring Daryl, Carol, and others from the OG TWD gang.

Gimple has to chuckle when asked about the possibilities for any second season, then comes pretty close to the answer he gave in February at TCA's winter press tour.

“It was a wild trip to take Living“,” he notes. “It's been like six years filled with a lot of hope and transformation and work.” And when all was said and done, “it didn't happen the way I thought it would; It happened a lot better“.

So when it comes to telling more of #Richonne's story…. “It's possible,” he says.
