Forty high-risk sex offenders were arrested across Quebec in April as part of a broader operation led by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
As of April 2, the provincial police, together with 24 municipal police forces across the province, conducted a series of interventions due to the high risk of recidivism for these individuals. The move will officially end on Friday.
These interventions were specifically aimed at bringing to justice those in targeted populations who breached the conditions under which they were placed under an order. Officers were also able to arrest those who were subject to warrants.
“This initiative will allow for a range of interventions related to impairments in respect of orders relating to registration on the National Sex Offenders Register,” the SQ noted in a press release on Thursday.
40 people arrested as part of the operation have appeared in court in recent weeks or will appear soon.
“Many cases, including this one, have demonstrated the positive impact of involved work. This will certainly not be the last such operation,” warns Captain Steve Cadieux, SQ's deputy director of criminal investigations, in the same press release.
