To deal with more frequent episodes of heavy rain, the City of Montreal is pooling major resources into a plan to anticipate flooding and make the city more resilient to climate change.
“This action plan reflects our commitment not only to efficient public infrastructure, but also to a safe metropolis that is ready for the challenges of the future,” said Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
The City of Montreal’s plan is structured around three key elements, providing support to owners, adapting regulations and creating a more flexible “sponge” infrastructure.
To do this, the City of Montreal wants to first provide owners with financial or technical assistance to adapt their buildings to withstand flooding.
The plant management did not rule out a significant adjustment in urban regulations with the integration of specific provisions in the new 2050 Urban Planning and Mobility Plan.
The plan also provides for accelerating investments in so-called “sponge” infrastructure, including 400 sponge walkways and around thirty sponge parks to be created by 2024-2025.
Also, the City of Montreal wants to formalize the inclusion of green infrastructure in all surface development work, particularly targeting public spaces and parks.
