A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning when he collided with a backhoe that was traveling at a low speed on Highway 40 west of Motonal Island.
The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. on Highway 40 East, not far from Morgan Boulevard, in Baie-d’Urfé.
For reasons still unexplained, an elderly motorcyclist in his early twenties collided head-on with the back of a backhoe traveling in the left lane in the middle of a road work zone.
It is difficult to explain what the operator was doing on the highway in control of his large vehicle, traveling at a very low speed.
A motorcyclist has no chance during a violent impact. He was declared dead on the spot and the police covered his body with a black tarpaulin.
The backhoe operator was not injured, but will meet with investigators in the coming hours to give his version of the facts.
Two of the three routes were closed to traffic to allow collision investigation experts from the Sûreté du Québec to establish the cause and circumstances of the tragedy.
The closure apparently caused a massive traffic jam that stretched over several kilometers in the morning.
