Carriers must also disclose the requirements customers must meet to receive “free” phone offers, as well as any hidden fees.
“AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile lied to millions of consumers, making false promises of free phones and ‘unlimited’ data plans that were simply not true,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. “Big companies are not exempt from following the law and cannot trick consumers into paying for services they will never receive.”
Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T will also have to designate a “dedicated representative” to receive customer complaints.
