A 22-year-old Longueuil man was killed and four other youths were killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Highway 50 in Papinauville, Outaouilles.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the accident occurred at 3:15 a.m., eastbound at kilometer 207.5. Speed ​​and alcohol may be factors.

“According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling at high speed,” said SQ spokesman Stéphane Tremblay. There were five people inside. The driver lost control. He caught the safety slides before rolling away. The driver of the vehicle was ejected and was pronounced dead at the hospital overnight.

Four other youths in their 20s who were in the car sustained serious injuries. But the police did not fear for their lives.

“Alcohol and speed may have played a role,” Mr. Tremblay added.

An SQ police officer trained in collision investigation examined the scene to ascertain the causes and circumstances of the tragedy.

The road reopened to traffic around 9:40 a.m. after being closed overnight between Papineauville and Montebello.
