A young 20-year-old suspect was arrested by the police just 300 meters from the scene of the crime, minutes after the forty-year-old was brutally murdered.
He was interviewed by investigators and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in a Laval court on a murder charge.
As of Thursday morning, police were working to determine if there was a connection between the suspect and the victim. Early in the investigation, authorities initially believed it was a domestic homicide, but this possibility was quickly ruled out.
According to our information, everything suggests that the young killer chose his victim at random.
The slain woman was Irina Dragicescu, a real estate agent working under the Sutton Excellence Group banner.
In all likelihood, Ms Dragicescu was only taking a simple walk in this small wooded area with many trails and a very popular among outdoor enthusiasts in the area.
The victim has no chance. He died on the spot.
The suspect reportedly fled on foot before being arrested not far from the crime scene. On Thursday morning, Laval police officers were still canvassing the wooded area, apparently looking for the knife used by the suspect.
Irina Dragicescu is the 15th woman murdered in Quebec since the start of the year and the fifth in the past 30 days.
