Double Olympic champion Katie Archibald has withdrawn from the Paris Games after breaking bones and ligaments in a freak accident.

The 30-year-old cyclist, who won gold medals in 2016 and 2020, suffered multiple injuries after tripping down a flight of stairs in her garden.

She said on Instagram that she “somehow managed” to dislocate her ankle, break her tibia and fibula bones, and “tear two ligaments out of the bones” on Tuesday.

Regarding the Great Britain Olympic team, “I’ve been told [it] “It will not include me,” she said, offering “a hundred apologies.”

She was a strong contender for the gold medal in three disciplines: omnium, Madison and team pursuit.

The Scottish athlete underwent surgery on Wednesday to “put the bones back together and reattach the ligaments.”

“One hundred thanks to the doctors, nurses, radiographers, porters, physiotherapists, surgeons and others at Manchester Royal Infirmary,” she said on social media.

“I was in full princess mode (assuming it took a whole team of A&E doctors and nurses to get Cinderella’s feet back up to slipper level).”

She added that Archibald was “still processing” her news, but wanted to confirm it publicly rather than “leave it up for debate.”

British Cycling said it “shared” its “sadness” and expressed its regret “for the cruel way in which she was denied the opportunity to ride for the medals she had aspired to in Paris”.

He added that the team would provide Archibald with “the best possible support”.
