An “out of control” forest fire is currently threatening the town of Port-Cartier. The flames were located 15 kilometers from the municipality, forcing the evacuation of two units north of Route 138.
According to the Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU), a set of three forest fires that are currently “out of control” are spreading north of Port-Cartier.
The “very threatening” fire is ten kilometers from the municipality and has already burned nearly 1,000 hectares of forest. Its flames were visible from the towns of Port-Cartier, Sept-Isles and Ushad Reserve.
Two other fires in the area are believed to be around Walker Lake and have destroyed more than 1,000 hectares of forest. The SOPFEU main fire management team will be deployed in the next few hours.
Another “out of control” fire is underway north of Sept-Iles. More than 180 hectares have already been burnt.
Rain is unlikely in the area before next Wednesday, and “very dry” temperatures will not improve conditions. According to SOPFEU, all these fires were started by lightning.
Air tankers were also dispatched to the “out of control” fire very close to the municipality of Seweri, home to about 220 people.
In total, seven fires are currently listed in the severity zone and twelve in the northern zone.
