Former President Donald Trump accepted his third Republican presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night. The lengthy acceptance speech was his first public address since an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania last week. Trump called for unity and outlined key campaign promises on the economy and the border, but repeated several false campaign claims. Flights around the world were grounded today after a global computer outage hit airlines and businesses. Major US carriers including Delta, United and American Airlines were affected, leading to widespread delays and cancellations. Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year, despite concerns that U.S. support for Kiev could wane if Republican candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House. This comes as arms supplies to Kiev have depleted Germany’s military stockpiles, already deteriorating due to decades of underinvestment. Germany hopes that Ukraine will be able to meet most of its military needs with $50 billion in loans from frozen Russian assets agreed by the Group of Seven nations, and that the money earmarked for weapons will not be used entirely. Meanwhile, many in Europe are looking with concern at Trump’s running mate, Senator J.D. Vance. Vance opposes military aid to Ukraine and has warned that Europe will have to rely less on the United States to defend the continent if the Republican Party regains control of the White House.
