Shane Waldron: Caleb Williams operating at ‘much higher’ level in training camp

Quarterback Caleb Williams, already the undisputed No. 1 overall pick on the Chicago Cubs, has returned to the team’s training camp headquarters in preparation for what’s to come, according to offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Waldon noted that Williams came into camp “a step ahead of where he left off.”

“[It] He shows he’s done a great job during his time out of the building, owning the offense, understanding the different calls, and [being] Able to come out here with these first two exercises and work at a much higher level than What did we leave behind?“Waldron said, via Patrick Finley of Chicago Sun Times“We know the final product is not the most important thing, but every day we see these incremental improvements that lead to the first game. That is our main goal in attack.”

Veteran running back DeAndre Swift also noted that Williams “has a better understanding” of the offense when he returns to camp.

“[H]He’s got a very quick mind. I can tell he’s making smarter moves. Quicker moves. You can tell he’s in a better position. That comes with time. Getting a better understanding of the attack. He’s had some free time, so he’s had more time to study the attack. So you can tell he’s made progress since he’s been back [from the break].

“I know he’s got a lot of work to do, he’s got a lot of hits every day. But he’s done a great job leading the offense since we’ve been back.”

The Bears plan to have Williams in the preseason to get him ready for the season, though that may or may not start with Chicago facing Houston in the Hall of Fame game next week.
