LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Less than two weeks after Elon Musk announced that SpaceX would leave California, he has decided to move some operations from the Florida coast to Long Beach.
The Port of Long Beach will be the new home for SpaceX’s Dragon recovery ship.
“I’m excited to share an update on Space Beach! Long Beach will be the new home of SpaceX’s Dragon recovery vehicle, with the West Coast Recovery Operations team based at the Port of Long Beach welcoming NASA and other private sector astronauts returning to Earth from orbit and beyond,” Mayor Rex Richardson said Sunday on Channel X.
The company says the move is aimed at reducing the risks associated with re-entry of debris from the spacecraft.
On July 16, Musk said he would move the company’s headquarters from Hawthorne to Texas in protest of a new California law that prevents schools from notifying parents of a student’s gender identity change.
He described the law as the “last straw.”
“I made it clear to Governor Newsom almost a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote.
Tesla, of which Musk is CEO, moved its headquarters to Austin from Palo Alto, California, in 2021.
Musk also said he had moved his residence from California to Texas, where there is no state-level personal income tax.
