Post Malone puts down roots in Music City.

The singer transitioned from his mix of rap and rock to a more country sound, culminating in the release of his first country album, “F-1 Trillion.” In doing so, he managed to establish relationships in Nashville, Tennessee, a place he seems to enjoy much more than Los Angeles.

In conversation with Kelly Bannon for Apple MusicSpeaking about the Tennessee capital, he said, “It’s been really great meeting people in Nashville who have made me feel welcome and making new friends and building new things, and for the first time, I’m not sad anymore. I’m happy, very happy.”

“LA is LA, and working here always makes me feel distracted, and it’s nice to go to Nashville and meet people who are the best at what they do, so kind and so talented,” he said.

While Malone recorded much of his old music in studios around Los Angeles, he worked on his new album in Nashville with other country artists — the album features collaborations with stars like Dolly Parton and Tim McGraw, as well as tracks with newer folk artists like Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll.

He explained that when he’s in Los Angeles, “it always feels like someone wants something from you. That’s something I didn’t see a lot of in Nashville.”

“I mean, I’m sure it’s out there somewhere; but I think I found a group of really good people… It’s been very new to go and see this band and write with new people, and I’m very excited,” he added.

In Los Angeles, he said, “There’s always something to do, and that’s not a bad thing, [but] “It’s not a good work environment for me at least.”

Malone has a two-year-old daughter, and he explained that after becoming a father, he was no longer interested in doing all the things Los Angeles has to offer. He said that before having his daughter he was able to “go out and then come back and then work,” but now he “just wants to go to concerts and make music and then go out.”

“I was having the time of my life,” he admitted. “I was happy.”

While it’s clear that the roots he planted in Nashville contributed to this happiness, he credited his daughter and fiancée with actually saving his life.

Despite his already great success, he admitted that “loneliness” tormented his daily life.

“Wake up, cry, drink, and then go about your life,” Malone said. “And then every time you go to bed, lie down, drink more, and cry. You’re like, ‘I have to wake up tomorrow and do this again.’ And I don’t feel that way anymore. That’s the most amazing thing.”
