(Quebec) Women’s Affairs Minister Martine Peron and representatives of Quebec Solidaire and Parti Québécois will participate Saturday in a protest organized by community groups and unions in response to the people gathering under the banner. “Marche pour la vie au Québec”, which is actually an anti-abortion group.
In a press conference on Friday, Mme Biron recalled that he plans to present an action plan next fall to improve access to abortion across Quebec. Currently, this access is limited depending on the region. However, the minister has refrained from tabling a bill he has mentioned in the past, amid groups urging him that a legislative initiative risks rolling back the right to abortion.
Quebec does not know how many people will take part in Saturday’s anti-abortion demonstration in front of Quebec’s parliament building. In an open letter published Friday DutyThe general coordinator of the Quebec Birth Planning Federation, which is supporting the pro-choice anti-protest along with 400 other organizations and individuals, “calls on all people in favor of bodily autonomy to reject any attempt to limit the right to abortion.”
“There is a broad consensus in Quebec in favor of women’s right to choose,” asserted Martin Biron. On its website, organizers of the anti-abortion march write, “Abortion is the killing before birth of a little girl or boy made in the image and likeness of God.” The self-proclaimed “leader” of the march claims to be an “ardent preacher of the gospel.”
At the end of Friday’s Question Time, elected officials unanimously adopted a motion read by Unity MP Manon Massey, jointly filed with Liberal Brigitte Garcio, PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamonton and independent MP Marie-Claude Nicholls, to “state where they live in the National Assembly” in Quebec. Regardless, Quebec calls on the government to continue working to ensure that abortion services are accessible and free for all women.”
