Four Montreal police officers were so frightened that a man tried to disarm one of them on October 16 at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.
Peter Kerr, a 28-year-old Ontario resident, was in the emergency room of the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) in Montreal last Sunday under police guard. He was arrested a few hours ago after refusing to identify himself amid police intervention.
He would have succeeded in seizing a patrolman’s service weapon, though not completely.
“Police were shouting over the airwaves for help, but to no avail as they had difficulty controlling a particularly aggressive 250-pound man,” says a JGH employee who was not authorized to speak to the media.
“They then yelled at the hospital staff to call 911 because the panic button on their radio wasn’t even sending a signal,” the same source said.
According to what we were allowed to learn, SPVM’s experts believe that the building’s enclosure would have prevented the transmission of distress signals.
Eventually more than 10 policemen arrived and helped the distressed officers.
Kerr appeared in a Montreal courthouse the next day on various charges.
He is due back in court on October 26 for a bail hearing.
The man had been wanted in Ontario since Aug. 19 after failing to appear in court on human trafficking charges, according to a Peel police report.
In Montreal, the last incident in which a man attempted to disarm a police officer occurred in January 2021.
SPVM police officer Sanjay Vick found his life threatened following a routine interception in the Park-Extension district.
A man identified as Ali Ngarukiye allegedly disarmed him and shot him.
Initially, Mamadi Camara was falsely accused and later acquitted of all charges following a mistrial on the man, leading to a public apology from Sylvain Caron, the former director of the SPVM.
