Adaptation of Jane Luen Yang’s graphic novel riding the Oscars 2023 wave
Viewers of Sunday night’s broadcast of the 2023 Academy Awards got their first real look American born Chinesethe upcoming Disney Plus TV series that also happens to be a reunion for the Oscar front-runners Everything everywhere at once.
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Jin Luwen Yang, American born Chinese “It tells the story of Jin Wang, an ordinary teenager juggling his high school social life and home life,” according to the official Disney Plus synopsis. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, more worlds collide as Jin unwittingly becomes embroiled in the Chinese mythological battle of the gods.
The trailer, which was released online ahead of the Oscars, naturally doesn’t focus so much on Jin (played by Ben Wang) instead on the cast of Oscar nominees (and potential winners), most notably Everything everywhere at once Michelle Yeoh, Ke Hui Kwan, and Stephanie Hsu direct in a montage of stunning scenes inspired by aloxia and mythology, before returning to the ordinary child at the center of the story.
Directed by Shang ChiDestin Daniel Creighton, American born Chinese And its unique blend of myth and coming-of-age tale will hit Disney Plus on May 24.
