Amy Schumer opens up about her battle with endometriosis.
Written by Daphne Clarence: Last year, comedian Amy Schumer revealed that she’s battling endometriosis, a disease marked by the growth of tissue outside the uterus. She underwent a hysterectomy and appendectomy in an attempt to cure the disease.
In the preview clip for the documentary series, Examination: With Dr. David Agos, Amy opened up about her experience with the condition, which she described as a “lonely” battle.
“It’s just a disease,” she said. “You tell someone you’re having really bad cramps, and they say, ‘Oh, that’s it being a woman,’ and you’re like, ‘No, it’s erratic.'”
Reflecting on her anguish, Amy said she had been in “extreme pain” her whole life, not just the week of her period.
“I’ve been in a lot of pain, you know, my whole life, not just the week of my period. It’s during ovulation. I’m hoping to have a good week in the month where I’m not in a lot of pain. I’m still trying to make it, and I’m still trying.” Going through life. It was really hard.”
After treatment, she said she felt better. “I felt like a new person. It was unbelievable,” she told Dr. Agus in the clip. She added, “I feel like someone lifted this veil that was over me and I felt like a different person and a new mom.”
Amy made a post in September 2021 after her surgery and wrote, “If your period is really painful, you may have endometriosis.”
According to the World Health Organization, endometriosis is a disease in which tissue forms outside the uterus that causes a chronic inflammatory reaction. It may lead to scar formation inside the pelvis and other parts of the body.
This condition causes painful periods, fatigue, depression, anxiety, flatulence, nausea, pain during and after sexual intercourse, and painful urination.
