Angel Reese issued a foul of her own for not standing up for her teammates during Sunday's scrimmage near the end of the Gamecocks' title win over LSU.
While the rest of the LSU Tigers were rushing to defend Flau'jae Johnson, Reese was seen walking in the opposite direction toward the end of the team's bench away from the scrimmage on Sunday.
The incident occurred with 2:08 left in the SEC Championship game.
South Carolina star Camila Cardoso sparked a brawl among the bench after she pushed Johnson hard in a retaliatory move after she collided with the Gamecocks' Ashlyn Watkins.
Rees has faced backlash for not supporting Johnson at the moment I finally took it up on X Shortly after 10 p.m
“As someone in my situation, sometimes you have to walk away from certain situations,” Reese wrote. “Catch the play before I roll my ankle again and I was already walking to the bench. I always ride for me. I'm so proud of this team and so excited for March.”
Another video posted to X showed Reese talking to Johnson face-to-face after things broke up.
Cardoso also issued an apology for her role in the chaos.
She was one of the main players involved in the incident that occurred
“I would like to offer my sincere apologies for my actions during today’s match.” Cardozo wrote on X after the match. “My conduct was not representative of who I am as a person or the South Carolina program, and I am deeply sorry for any inconvenience or inconvenience this behavior may have caused. I take full responsibility for my actions and assure you that I am committed to conducting myself with the utmost respect and sportsmanship in the future.”
The Gamecocks walked away with the SEC title in what would eventually become a 79-72 win, but because of this episode, they would be without Cardoso for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Since she was assessed a fighting penalty, Cardoso was the only player to miss time in March Madness as a result of the scrimmage.
“I just want to apologize to the basketball community. When you play in championship games like this in our league, things get heated,” South Carolina coach Don Staley said in an ESPN interview after the game. “No ill intentions. Their emotions have gotten so far beyond them that sometimes these things happen.
South Carolina is the presumptive top seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
