Apple today released an updated version of iOS 17.6.1, with the new software coming a week and a half after the original iOS 17.6.1 update was released. The new version carries the build number 21G101, which is up from 21G93.

iOS 17.6.1 can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads wirelessly by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

According to Apple’s release notes, the iOS 17.6.1 update addresses an issue that could prevent Advanced Data Protection from being enabled or disabled. It’s not clear what the difference is between the new version of the software and the original version.

This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents Advanced Data Protection from being enabled or disabled.

The Advanced Data Protection issue affected a small number of users. Those who tried to turn on Advanced Data Protection and were unable to activate it saw an error message and it was clearly disabled. Affected users who tried to turn it off saw it disabled in the interface, even though it was actually still active for iCloud data.

Both bugs have been fixed in the update. iPhone users who encountered the bug that prevented Advanced Data Protection from turning off properly will see a notification asking them to confirm their decision to turn off the feature after installing iOS 17.6.1. Apple says the few users who encountered this bug had the expected level of security or more, in the case where Advanced Data Protection was not turned off as expected.
