Argentina vs Canada live updates: Highlights, lineups and how to watch as Messi & Co look to Copa America final

Of the four remaining teams in the 2024 Copa America, only one is from North America. And sadly for American soccer fans, that team is not the United States men’s national team.

The Copa America semifinals begin Tuesday (8 p.m. ET, FS1/Univision) with powerhouse Argentina taking on Canada at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Canada, making their Copa America debut, became the fourth CONCACAF team to reach the tournament’s semifinals after beating Venezuela 4-3 on penalties on Friday. Argentina also advanced with a 4-2 shootout win over Ecuador — despite the injury to their biggest star.

Lionel Messi, who missed some time earlier in the tournament with a leg injury, will start for Argentina, who are strong favourites to secure a place in Sunday’s final. Argentina to win is -330 at BetMGM with Canada to win at +850.

The two teams met earlier in the group stage, with Argentina winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. After failing to score against Argentina in their opening Copa America match, Canada coach Jesse Marsch told reporters at a press conference on Monday: “This is going to be the best game we’ve ever played and it may not be enough.”

From a state of relative stalemate, Argentina managed to beat Canada by a narrow two-goal margin.

The first, from a Canadian perspective, was not dangerous: Cristian Romero found Rodrigo De Paul in the defensive midfield position.

The second pass from De Paul to Julian Alvarez should have been harmless at all, but Moise Pompito and Alistair Johnstone allowed Alvarez to find too much space between them, and then Pompito hesitated on Alvarez’s first touch, which was excellent.
