DC Water has issued a boil water advisory for customers in parts of the Northwest and Northeast.
People in the affected area should not drink, cook, brush their teeth, wash fruits and vegetables, make ice, or make baby formula using water without boiling it for one minute first.
Check this map to see if you live in the affected area.
DC Water said it has received reports of low or no water pressure. The loss of pressure may have led to contamination and bacteria in the water.
DC Water is investigating whether a water main break around 31st Street NW and Aberfoyle Place NW in Barnaby Woods is solely responsible for the loss of pressure.
Customers in the affected area should follow this guidance from DC Water:
- Discard any drinks or ice prepared after Friday, January 19, 2024 at 11 a.m.
- Run cold water until it runs clear (if discolored) before boiling.
- Run cold water for 2 minutes if known sources of lead are present before boiling.
- Bring the water to a boil for one minute and leave to cool.
- Store cooled water in a clean, covered container.
DC Water expects the earliest the warning will be lifted is Sunday. Normal water use can be resumed after two consecutive days of tests showing no bacteria.
