Canadian public broadcaster leaves Twitter and joins US media

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has announced that it will stop publishing content on Twitter owned by Elon Musk, joining other media outlets based in the United States.

NPR was the first to announce its decision last week, saying it would allow its Twitter accounts to cease operating and no longer post on the social media platform in response to Twitter adding the “state media” label to a number of media outlets that receive some public funding.

Subsequently, Twitter dropped the “state-owned” tag and changed it to “government-funded”, after receiving widespread opposition from the decision. In a statement, White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said that NPR is an independent news organization, saying, “If anyone follows their coverage, it’s clear that they are indeed an independent news organization.”
