Charlesburg fire leaves 12 families homeless

About twenty people found themselves on the street after a fire broke out overnight Wednesday into Thursday at a 12-house residential building in the Charlesbourg sector in Quebec.

Just after midnight, calls to 911 reported a house fire in a three-story building on Rue des Visions, followed by an explosion.

Fifty firefighters from the Quebec Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) were sent to the scene to extinguish the fire.

A third alarm prompted the mobilization of more personnel when Hydro-Québec removed remote loads to facilitate the intervention of firefighters.

All occupants of the building were evacuated and “none of the 12 residences can be re-entered due to fire or water damage,” the SPCIQ indicated.

Red Cross teams were called to the scene to care for 25 victims, according to the SPCIQ, which noted that the incident remains under investigation.

The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire, which did not result in any injuries to residents of the residential building.
