“Deprivation of this right is unacceptable”: Quebec tenants protest to change leases

Tenants demonstrated in large numbers in several Quebec cities on Saturday against a provincial bill that would allow landlords to refuse to grant leases.

“Bill 31 is still not passed […]”, it is important to send a message and tell the government that lease transfer is unacceptable to take away this right”, Newspaper Cédric Dussault, spokesperson for the Reorganization of Housing Committees and Tenant Associations of Quebec (RCLALQ).

By 1 p.m., dozens, if not hundreds, of people were already near the Prefontaine metro station in Montreal.

Contingents were also to be asked for at Quebec, Rouen-Noranda, Rimouski and Sherbrooke.

The protests come as new data this week revealed that more than 10,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Quebec.

Discharge is the cause in almost 25% of cases.
