Dear Abby: Can people in this community stop assuming that everyone has a smartphone? Not everyone is willing—or able—to spend over $1,000 for a single piece. Some of us carry older, less expensive phones that take calls and texts and that’s it.
I just got off a very annoying phone call with the secretary at my elderly mother’s doctor’s office, who said she was “sending a link” to a video conference on her phone. I almost choked. I said stop it, okay? See, not everyone has an expensive phone! Then she tweeted, “Okay, I’ll send the link to your phone, and she can use your phone!” Then I had to explain that I don’t have an expensive phone either.
Our society forces people to spend tons of money on these games. You go to a bank and ask a customer service representative for help, “Oh, easy. You can set it up yourself with your phone! You call a company to get an update on an order, and three hours later, when a live person finally picks up, you’re told, “You can Just track your order using your phone!” Makes me want to yell at my $30 flip phone. – I love my cheap phone
Dear Love: Thank you for allowing me to help you catharsis. I understand your frustration because your problem is one I’ve heard about from other seniors as well. Although technology is moving quickly, not everyone is on the cutting edge of technology. Since this is going to happen more and more frequently, for your own sake and for your mom’s sake, it’s time to start seriously considering upgrading one or more of your devices.
