Google’s rollout of AI search begins today. company announce This morning, access to Google’s Research Generation Experience (SGE) and other US research laboratories was opened. If you have not already done so, you will need to register on the waiting list and wait until you receive an email announcing that it is your turn.
Unveiled at Google I/O 2023 earlier this month, Google SGE is the company’s integration of conversational AI into the classic search experience. If you’ve played with Bing AI, expect a familiar – but different – product. Cherlynn Low pointed out in Engadget’s SGE preview that Google’s AI-powered search uses the same input bar as it does instead of a separate chatbot field like in Bing. Then, the AI results will appear in a shaded section below the search bar (and sponsored results) but above the standard web results. Meanwhile, at the top right of the AI results is a button that lets you expand the snapshot, and adds cards showing which articles were sourced. Finally, you can ask follow-up questions by clicking on the button below the results.
Google describes the snapshot as “key information to keep in mind, with links to dig deeper.” Think of it like a slice of Bard injected (somewhat) seamlessly into the Google search you already know.
Additionally, Google is opening up access to other research labs, including code tips and add to spreadsheets (both US-only at the moment). Code Tips “harnesses the power of big language paradigms to provide pointers for faster, smarter code writing.” It lets aspiring developers ask how-to questions about programming languages (C, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript), tools (Docker, Git, shells), and algorithms. Meanwhile, as its name suggests, Add to Sheets allows you to insert search results directly into the Google Sheets application. Clicking the Sheets icon to the left of the search result will bring up a list of your recent documents; Choose one to which you want to attach the result.
If you are not in range Research labs waiting list, you can click the Labs icon (the beaker icon) in a new tab in Chrome desktop or in the Google Search app on Android or iOS. However, the company hasn’t announced how quickly or broadly it will unlock access, so you may need to be patient.
