Google launches NotebookLM with Gemini Pro, drops the waiting list

At I/O 2023 in May, Google showed off a demo of an “AI-first notebook” that was originally called Project Tailwind. LM notebook It’s now seeing a general release in the US, and – like the Bard – will now be powered by Gemini Pro.

Google has been “talking with knowledge workers, creatives, students, and educators to learn more about the ways they use (and what they like) NotebookLM” since opening early access in July. Users love the automatically generated summaries and suggested follow-up questions that provide “a useful new way to understand difficult text and piece together connections between multiple documents.”

Gemini Pro is used specifically for document understanding and reasoning, but PaLM 2 and other models are also leveraged.

Launching today, NotebookLM is adding dozens of new features over the coming weeks. The Notebook that appears at the top of the chat box with a card-based grid user interface will allow you to save NotebookLM responses, excerpts from your sources, and any notes you’ve written.

You can select multiple notes and have NotebookLM summarize them, combine them into a single note, or create an outline, study guide, or something broader, such as turning your notes into an email newsletter, text outline, or draft of a marketing plan. There is also a shortcut to export to Google Docs.

Meanwhile, NotebookLM will “dynamically suggest actions based on what you do”:

  • “…When you select a passage while reading a source, NotebookLM will automatically offer to summarize the text in a new note, or help you understand technical language or complex ideas.”
  • “…As you write a note, NotebookLM will provide tools to improve or improve your prose, or suggest related ideas from your sources based on what you just wrote.”

NotebookLM now lets you select sources (from the sidebar) to specifically chat with only these information groups, while Google is increasing the limit per source notebook to 100.

Other usability updates let you hide the source and quickly jump from quote to source. These new features will be rolled out over the coming weeks after the launch of Gemini Pro.
