(OTTAWA) Bloc Quebecois are back on the offensive as experts question whether to ban assault weapons. The Liberals introduced two controversial amendments to Bill C-21 that would expand the definition of a prohibited firearm and introduce a list of models to be banned.
MP Cristina Michaud’s first attempt failed on Tuesday after the Conservatives refused to endorse it. He wanted to hear back from experts who had testified during the parliamentary committee’s study of the bill to get their views on the content of the amendments.
“We are at an impasse, he mentions in an interview. We have the impression that we are not progressing. »
He’s asking for a day or two to consult on the amendments, specifically to Quebec’s hunters and fishermen association. SKS type firearms are part of the list of prohibited models. It is a military style weapon, but popular among hunters.
Bloc Québécois needs the support of four MPs on the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to secure an emergency meeting. Mme NDP MP Michaud believes he can have the support of Alistair McGregor and Liberal MPs.
More details to come.
