Consumer protection experts say an unsolicited e-commerce order could indicate what’s called a brushing scam — a technique some unscrupulous online retailers use to create fake reviews for their products. The culprit is usually a third-party seller on one of the major e-commerce platforms looking to achieve verified merchant status, which enables the seller to write product reviews on someone else’s behalf.

The scams often involve a foreign company obtaining someone’s address they found online and then delivering products to their home, according to the Better Business Bureau. Josh Planos, a BBB spokesman, advises consumers who receive unwanted products to document incidents and contact retailers directly to stop deliveries.

“They intend to show that you have written a glowing online review of their merchandise and that you are an authorized purchaser of those merchandise,” the BBB said in a statement. Warn. “They then post a fake, positive review to improve their product rankings, which means more sales. The reward is very lucrative from their perspective.”
