“At least he died without suffering,” consoles the father of a 5-year-old boy who died in a fire that killed three people in Portneuf on Christmas Eve, believing that candles used to run out of power could be to blame. Flames.

Dozens of relatives gathered in Saint-Basil on Tuesday to pray in front of the ruins of the triplex that was destroyed by flames in the early hours of December 24.

Photos, teddy bears and flowers were placed at the scene of the tragedy that took little Dylan Pelletier-Lired, 5, his mother, Vanessa Pelletier, and his wife, Anthony Biazotto.

“The hardest part was hearing my other son tell me he couldn’t play with his brother anymore. Next Christmases will never be the same again for our family,” he said confidently Register The child’s father is David Lirrett.

“My little boom boom will be watching over us from above…” he added, his eyes watering and his throat tightening with emotion.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the Sûreté du Québec is currently conducting an investigation to shed light on the matter. But the father of the family has his own hypothesis.

A violent storm passing through Quebec left the residence without electricity, and Mr. Liret believes.

“Vanessa liked to use candles during blackouts. With two cats and two dogs, maybe one of them grabbed one and it spread. It’s an old building,” he explains.

The coroner would have confirmed that the cause of her son’s death was smoke inhalation, not fire.

“He was asleep, so he didn’t have a chance. But at least he died without suffering,” sighed Mr. Lirrett.

Two more people may have died in this tragic incident. The couple, who lived on the ground floor of the building, managed to get out of the house in time due to a stressful impulse.

“My brother-in-law, who never drinks alcohol, drank some beer the night before. He got up early that morning to go to the bathroom. That’s when he saw smoke filling the room,” says Jonathan LaFlamme, who went there to help his sister.

But when firefighters arrived, it was already too late for the upstairs neighbors, he says.

“When they opened the upstairs door with an axe, they retreated and shouted for water to be sent immediately. The fire was too strong for them to come in,” said Mr. Laflamme said.

Little Dylan’s funeral will take place on January 29 at the La Souvenance funeral home near Val-Belaire.
