Midjourney released an upgraded version of its AI image generation service, Midjourney V6, on Thursday. The update is a major improvement that has truly amazed users with its stunningly realistic visuals and attention to detail. He may not be here for long, so here’s how to get the V6 running now.

The alpha version of Midjourney V6 will be available on Discord during the winter break. This upgrade has been in the works for the past nine months, and the developers are releasing it for a short period starting today. My first impressions of the Midjourney V6 were shocking. Gizmodo tested some leading AI image generators not long ago, but this new model from Midjourney puts them all to shame. The V6’s visuals are surprisingly realistic, without sacrificing the creativity that Midjourney has always had. Usually, AI-powered image generators force you to choose between the real and the fantastical, but the Midjourney V6 is the best combination of the two I’ve seen.

Just like previous versions, you’ll need to get started in a Discord server with Mid-flight bot. Once you’re there, simply type “/settings” into the chat bar, and you’ll be prompted with a list of versions of Midjourney that you can switch between. The default Midjourney version will likely be V5.2, but you can switch to V6 for a limited time. Then you can create your own prompts as usual just by typing “/imagine” followed by whatever you can dream up.

The other way to access Midjourney V6 is by following all of your prompts with “—v 6” at the end. I find this method to be a bit more complicated, but it works the same way.

Developers NB Midjourney V6 requires you to prompt differently than previous versions. V6 is much better at understanding you, so be as clear in your claims as possible. If you want something more concrete, end your prompt with “raw-style” instead of asking with words.

The updated version is slower than other Midjourney models, but not by much. The images they created are so realistic, that Midjourney has raised the indicators of its moderation systems. The developers say they will be enforcing their community standards more strictly, so “don’t be a jerk or create images to cause drama.” However, these images are so convincing that it is difficult to imagine that they would not be used to deceive.
