Montreal is investing $5.6 million to acquire the Manoir LaFontaine, a building that has become a symbol of the struggle against reconstruction – by a non-profit organization.
The tower of 90 rental units, located in La Fontaine Park in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, is to be acquired by Interloge.
On Friday, the city of Montreal’s executive committee voted in favor of contributing 5.6 million to “acquire and renovate” the dilapidated building.
“The city is investing in implementing a plan to provide sustainable affordable housing without speculation,” Mayor Valerie Plante commented on Twitter.
Built in 1966, Manoir Lafontaine was purchased in 2019 by businessmen Brandon Shiller and Jeremy Kornbluth, who sought to evict tenants in order to carry out renovations. Many of the residents have been there for decades and pay less than market rent.
