What is a leap year? This is the science behind the extra day.
Why do we have leap years? The reason behind that extra day on February 29 is more complicated than you think.
There's an extra day on the calendar this year, and Krispy Kreme is celebrating by offering customers discounted donuts.
The company announced Monday that it is offering customers a dozen original glazed donuts for $2.29 with the purchase of any twelve regular price donuts on Thursday, February 2. 29 in honor of Leap Day.
In addition, customers who have Feb. 29th birthday people can get a free dozen of Original Glazed Cupcakes, no purchase necessary. Krispy Kreme said proof of birth date is required.
“An extra day out of the year presents an irresistible opportunity for Krispy Kreme to be extra nice with our guests,” said Dave Skena, Global Chief Brand Officer at Krispy Kreme. “So, we're celebrating Leap Day by the dozens, including fans whose real birthday only comes every four years.”

The donut chain has given customers at participating retail locations the ultimate SOS service, offering one free OG donut after a nationwide communications outage affecting tens of thousands of customers.
