Israel on Friday vowed to launch a large-scale military attack against Iran if the Hezbollah terror group joins the ongoing war, according to a report.
Nir Barkat, Israel’s economy minister, warned that Israel would “eliminate Hezbollah,” its proxy terrorist group in Lebanon, if it carried out its threats to throw its military support behind Hamas.
“Iran’s plan is to attack Israel on all fronts. If we find that they intend to target Israel, we will not be satisfied with responding on those fronts, but rather we will head to the head of the snake, which is Iran.” He told the Daily Mail.
He added: “The ayatollahs in Iran will not sleep well at night, and we will make sure that they will pay a heavy price if, God forbid, they open the northern front.”
Hezbollah exchanged fire with Israeli forces on the Lebanese border during the past two weeks in response to the ongoing bombing carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces on the Gaza Strip.
The Lebanon-based militia and Iranian officials reportedly helped Hamas refine tactical and strategic plans for the October 7 surprise attack on Israel that left 1,300 people dead and nearly 200 hostage.
Hezbollah leaders announced last week that they were “fully prepared” to join the fight in support of Hamas.
If Israel discovers that Hezbollah is opening an entire war front on Israel’s northern border, the IDF will launch a merciless charge against Iran, which Barkat said is synonymous with Hezbollah.
He said that the terrorist group “will not escalate without an order from Iran,” adding that there is a “global alignment of evil” between Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
Lebanon and Hezbollah will pay a heavy price, just as Hamas will pay. “But this is not enough,” Barakat said.
He added: “The very clear message is that we will go after Iran’s presidents as well.” When will we do that? When we decide.
“Israel has a very clear message to our enemies. We tell them, look at what’s happening in Gaza – you will get the same treatment if you attack us. We will wipe you off the face of the earth.”
The Biden administration is urging Israeli leaders not to carry out any major strike against Hezbollah, warning that the Middle Eastern country will face difficulties in a war on two fronts.
US officials believe that the struggle against the powerful militia will lead to an intense escalation that will attract both the United States and Iran.
The White House is already in talks about deploying its military force in light of the increasing chance of Hezbollah joining the war. The insider told Axios.
Barakat’s inflammatory statements come at a time when Israel is intensifying its militias in anticipation of an expected ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
A formation of tanks was stationed on the southern border on Friday, where 300,000 soldiers are already stationed.
Hamas claimed to be holding some 203 Israeli hostages inside the network of tunnels it built under Gaza – which Barkat vowed would become “the largest cemetery in the world.”
