James Corden Apologizes For Controversy Over Restaurant Ban In Monologue

James Corden He took some time at the start of Monday’s episode of “The Late Late Show” to acknowledge the recent controversy over his now-reversed ban from New York’s Balthazar restaurant, offering an apology for the “rude comment” he made to the company’s wait staff. Corden said he made the comment “in the heat of the moment” after a dish that his wife was allergic to was accidentally served to his table.

I didn’t scream or shout. I did not get out of my seat. I never called anyone names or used derogatory language. I was walking around thinking I had done nothing wrong, right? But the truth I have. “You made a rude comment and it was a mistake,” Corden said. It was an unnecessary comment. It was unbecoming of a servant.”

Keith McNally, owner of Balthazar, publicly banned Corden from his job last week, posting a statement on Instagram stating that alleged Two separate incidents of rude behavior by the host late at night. But McNally reversed the ban after a phone call with Corden in which the comedian apologized profusely.

Corden also gave his praise to Balthazar – “I love it there, the food, the ambiance, the service” – and explained why he was slow to comment publicly on the situation.

“When these moments come my way, I like to adopt a completely British attitude,” Corden said. “There’s no explanation if there’s no grumbling. It’s my motto a lot. But as my father pointed out to me on Saturday, he said to me, ‘Son, I’ve already complained. So you might need clarification. Look, when you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility.'”

Corden also expressed the hope that he would be welcomed back to Balthasar when he visits New York, so that he can offer his apologies in person.
