The social media outrage directed at Campion over her speech for best director stemmed from a certain moment that came after she acknowledged the other nominees in the category, all of whom are men.
Dog Power then Heller said, “Venus and Serena, you two are marvels. However, you don’t play against guys, as I should.”
In addition to being inaccurate (the men’s tennis champions faced off), Campion’s statement was considered by some to dismiss two successful achievements of the black women.
“I made a reckless comment that equals what I do in the world of movies with all that Serena Williams and Venus Williams have achieved,” Campion said in a statement Monday. “It was not my intention to underestimate these two legendary black women and world class athletes.” its representative. “The truth is that the Williams sisters are, in fact, fighting against men on (and off) the court, and both have raised the bar and opened the doors to what is possible for women in this world. The last thing I ever want to do is belittle amazing women.”
Campion’s speech – which was one of four awards her Academy Award-nominated film received on Sunday – began on a positive note, as Campion acknowledged the many “cool” women present in the audience, including the Williams sisters.
“What an honor to be with you in the room,” she said, specifically addressing the husband, before asking them for tennis lessons.
In her statement Monday, Campion renewed her “love” to Venus and Serena Williams.
“Their accomplishments are gigantic and inspiring,” she said. “Serena and Venus, I apologize and fully celebrate you.”
It’s been a few weeks of ups and downs for Campion, whose film is a strong contender for Best Picture at the Academy Awards later this month.
